The deployment of u-Bat is planned to detect bird chirps at Indian Institute of Science (IISc). For deployment purposes, we have written integrated firmware for AudioMoth (widely used for data logging in ecological studies) incorporating the ULP-ACE into audiomoth_firmware_basic. We have trained the model with cuckoo bird sounds using the the framework and the working demonstration is given on the right.
The setup is estimated to sustain for 45-60 days with 3 AA batteries. The firmware code, hardware and software requirements and how to port it in the AudioMoth are given in the GitHub repo
Timber logging has been one of the biggest threats to the forests across India. Over 35 large trees, inclding Halong, the state tree of Assam and Makai and Titasopa, were chopped by miscreants using mechanised chain saws at Dehing Patkai. To eradicate this problem, IISc in collaboration with Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), India and forest department at Dehing Patkai are planning to use u-Bat to detect smuggling sounds and wirelessly transmit the detection results over LoRaWAN network.
